Description

E. Rénard Miniature of a woman in a rectangular format painted with watercolor on ivory. The miniature depicts a young woman with a Pre-Raphaelite spirit: nude, with exposed breasts in a meadow among trees, holding a snake in her raised right hand and gazing intently at it. In her lowered left hand, she holds a hand. These antithetical symbols seem to be fighting with a long-haired vestal. The miniature has a gilded metal frame with a top ornament and is placed within a carved and gilded wooden frame. We found no information about the artist E. Rénard. France, late 1800s / early 1900s.

Luxurious antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.

Many styles characterize antique furniture, but we can highlight a few of the most important. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, marked by the prevailing Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles transitioned into pseudo styles of classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.

Empire-style furniture and accessories date from the late 18th to early 19th century. Everything was influenced by Napoleon’s reign, which imposed a strong resemblance and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.

Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI style, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, a term derived from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these items.

Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance. Which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture-making art. Renaissance style was quite heavy and massive. It used brown stains, cornices, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times also inspired this style, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.

Lion paws, eagle heads – these are common features in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture inspired by Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that each country perceived furniture production differently, so each style had its unique character in each nation. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique suitable for your interior.

The most important aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. And this is ultimately crucial from the buyer’s perspective, as many fakes circulate on the market.
