We strive to ensure each candle is of the highest quality. This means focusing on every detail so that the candles, which look, burn, and smell wonderful, truly are. It took us eighteen months to create our fragrances, with hundreds of hours dedicated to blending, pouring, and testing. This ensures that for each candle size, there is the best balance of wax and fragrance distribution combined with the optimal thickness of various wicks selected to ensure the highest quality burn.

Our candles have been made at our Dublin headquarters since 1488. They are still hand-poured as they were centuries ago, which correlates tradition with modernity. We are committed to production in Ireland and maintain the status of the oldest company in Ireland.

We are the oldest candle-making company in the world. For centuries, we have pioneered new candle-making techniques in our Dublin factory, and we still reside in this city. Our candles are woven into the community of Ireland and have provided light for homes and streets for over 500 years.

BACKGROUND

It all began on Wynetavern Street, Dublin, where John G Rathborne founded our manufactory. He moved from Chester, England, to start a new profession in candle production. Candles have been an integral part of people's lives since the 1530s. Joseph's candles became a key supplier for the city. Our products made the city of Dublin and the Irish seas safe at night, as they were used to illuminate homes, streets, and lighthouses for residents and overseas visitors.

INNOVATION AND TRADITION

Throughout our 500-year experience, we have developed our candles and the appropriate techniques and materials for our products. During the industrial revolution, we moved away from animal tallow to develop special new wax formulas using beeswax and stearin. This new blend provided a clean, slower burn while preserving our artisanal methods, such as handcrafting all our candles.

BEYOND THE PALE COLLECTION

To celebrate being the oldest candle-making company in the world and five centuries of handcrafting, we created the Beyond the Pale collection, six beautiful fragrances that capture the spirit of Ireland with a luxurious and modern twist. The glow of candles is now more familiar in the home than on the streets, and this collection is the result of centuries of innovation. We drew inspiration from Dublin, saying: Beyond the Pale; the wild area beyond the safety of city walls. We created scents inspired by Irish roses, herbal blends of mint and thyme, and the bark of Irish trees. We craft our luxury fragrances to complement the home and indulge the senses, creating a range of desirable and stylish accessories for modern living.

EXPERIENCE AN UNFORGETTABLE SCENT

The scent created by the stormy ocean waves crashing against the rocky shores of the Irish coast, blending ozone with earth. 

Rich ozone accords from the Irish coast combine with the crisp freshness of aromatic woods, smoked agarwood, and aged cedar. Dark, sharp, and spicy notes of ginger, pepper, and anise reveal a base of sweet patchouli and delicate musk. 

This luxury reed diffuser is beautifully presented in clear glass. The diffuser is additionally packaged in a decorative gift box. Inside is a 200 ml refill. The refill lasts from 20 to 24 weeks, depending on the number of scent sticks used.
