Mercedes-Benz has developed a completely new 12-cylinder engine with 485 HP for the W 154, due to the new racing formula for 3-liter supercharged engines introduced in 1938. It turned out that the new W 154 with its powerful V-12 engine was very competitive, if not superior.

In 1938, a new racing formula was introduced, limiting the engine capacity of supercharged racing cars to 3 liters. This rule change redefined the direction of motor racing for the years to come.

Mercedes-Benz developed a completely new 12-cylinder engine with 485 HP for the W 154. A 5-speed gearbox was added and mounted directly on the rear de Dion axle. One fuel tank was located at the back, and another in the cockpit, above the driver's legs. In this car, the Daimler-Benz team, consisting of Caracciola, Lang, von Brauchitsch, and Seaman, achieved one victory after another. In 1938, Caracciola became the European Champion. At the French Grand Prix on July 3, 1938, Mercedes-Benz achieved a triple victory: von Brauchitsch in first place, Caracciola in second, and Hermann Lang in third. In 1939, Hermann Lang became the European Champion driving the renewed W 154.
