Description
Mercedes displayed four W125 racing cars at the 1937 Donington Grand Prix. With starting number 2, Hermann Lang started from the front row. On lap 10
Lang took the lead of the race. But later, he had to deal with serious issues with the front wheel suspension – a fault that was very unusual for the W125 so far. It is likely that
the extremely bumpy track (including one large jump) caused this problem. CMC recreated Lang’s car almost identical to the original.
The Donington Grand Prix in England took place on October 2nd, marking the final race of the 1937 season and the last round of the 750 kg formula races. Although it was not part of the European Championship Grand Prix, it was the first time the Grand Prix scene came to Great Britain and an opportunity to see spectacular performances and racing giants.
Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union were deeply involved in the main Grand Prix competitions, so a duel between them was expected, especially after reports that both teams sent their top drivers to the UK, such as Rudolf Caracciola for Mercedes-Benz and Bernd Rosemeyer for Auto Union. For safety reasons, the race organizers also decided that all participating cars should be equipped with an additional leather strap to keep the engine cover securely closed, giving each racing car a very distinctive look.
The race was a relentless showdown between the young Bernd Rosemeyer in the Auto Union Type C and Manfred von Brauchitsch in his 8-cylinder supercharged Mercedes W 125 with 570 HP. Ultimately, Rosemeyer won, with von Brauchitsch finishing 2nd and Caracciola 3rd. The other two Mercedes drivers, Hermann Lang and Richard Seaman, a native Brit and local hero, were less fortunate. Both had to withdraw due to technical issues or accidents.
Overall, Mercedes would be satisfied with 2nd and 3rd places. The W125 proved to be the most successful Grand Prix car of that season, and Rudolf Caracciola was crowned the European Champion of 1937.
