The D50 project by Lancia proved to be a worthy rival in the hands of Ferrari. Scuderia Ferrari had a very successful season in the 1956 Formula 1 races. The culmination was Fangio winning his fourth World Drivers' Championship. Both Collins and Fangio raced the D50 with a long nose on the Nürburgring circuit during the German Grand Prix. This was the only appearance of the D50 with a long nose during the 1956 F1 racing season. As the seventh race of the eight-round 1956 World Championship, the German Grand Prix took place on August 5th at the Nürburgring circuit. As the F1 season drew to a close, Peter Collins led the drivers' standings with one point ahead of Juan Manuel Fangio, his teammate at Scuderia Ferrari. Over Jean Behra, who was racing for Maserati, Collins had a four-point advantage. All three had a chance to compete for the championship title, while Stirling Moss was already too far behind to claim the title himself.

Peter Collins, a young British driver, raced a Ferrari with a long nose, just like his teammate Juan Manuel Fangio. The long nose not only gave the D50 a strikingly elegant appearance but also improved its aerodynamics. The green stripe surrounding the tip of Collins' D50's long nose helped the pit crew identify the car during the race based on Fangio's long nose.

In the qualifying session, Fangio secured pole position by 0.3 seconds ahead of Collins. Castellotti, another teammate at Scuderia Ferrari, qualified third, three seconds behind. About ten seconds later, Stirling Moss, driving for Maserati, qualified fourth. The race lasted 22 laps. After the start, Collins took the lead, but on the first lap, Fangio overtook him. Fangio was able to maintain the lead until the very end of the race. A mistake made in the heat of the race forced Collins to retire prematurely.

Only seven of the nineteen drivers finished the race, and the top five finishers received championship points. As a result, Fangio comfortably overtook Stirling Moss, who finished second, crossing the finish line a few seconds ahead of his Maserati teammate Behr. In the drivers' standings, Collins lost the lead but was still able to make a comeback in the final GP race and claim the championship title.
