Description
Grand landscape with ruins from 1700. Capriccio with ruins and figures, oil painting on canvas, early 18th century, good condition.
Capriccio is a term coined at the end of the Renaissance and has several meanings with a common point. Capriccio was a movement of the soul, more precisely an excitation of the imagination, which gave rise to various visualizations. From an artistic perspective, there is no doubt that the Capriccio genre developed in the Eternal City in the first decades of the 17th century and was inspired by the ruins of the classical era.
This canvas is essentially ruined, as the landscape plays a secondary role in the composition. The unidentified ruins here have a suggestive template, meaning they utilize their emotional potential to outline imaginary landscapes. The scene is symbolically observed by a Roman knight, with two beggars sitting on the rubble, as if to emphasize the fall of the classical world.
The painting has been relined and restored into a new frame; it has undergone conservation and has several added paint details. The frame is French, from the 19th century.
The artwork is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity for circulation.
Exceptional antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that have a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, especially the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture and accessories date from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. Everything was influenced by Napoleon’s reign, which imposed a strong resemblance to Roman and Greek decorative motifs.
Neoclassical furniture is associated with Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, a term derived from Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly ornate, luxurious pieces meant to radiate splendor and serve a significant role in opulence. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style is also significant, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries and leaving a profound mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, often using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets and broadly speaking, chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times also inspired these designs, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture inspired by Italian and French artisans, paying homage to and preserving the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, giving each style a unique character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.
The key aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is crucial from the buyer’s perspective, as many fakes circulate on the market.
