English Pewter Company is the largest producer of high-quality pewter gifts in the UK. Founded in 1977, this family-owned company exports worldwide, and their exceptional products can be seen in many leading retail outlets globally. Commitment to quality, service, and price is the foundation of the company's operations.

MADE IN SHEFFIELD

All pewter products are handcrafted in the world-renowned manufacturing city of Sheffield. For centuries, Sheffield has been synonymous with high-quality production. Although somewhat smaller than in previous decades, this trend continues today, and Sheffield remains a leader in the production of high-quality cutlery, steel, and pewter.

A HISTORY OF EXCELLENCE SINCE 1977

Pewter, an easy-to-work alloy, has been with us since biblical times. The earliest mentions of pewter in the UK date back to Roman times around 250 AD. The significance of pewter as a metal and commodity did not fully develop until the Middle Ages. This period, often referred to as the "golden age of the English Yeoman," marked the transformation of the material into everyday use, made possible by economic growth, particularly through the mass export of British wool and textiles and the increasing availability of raw materials for pewter production.

Pewter production remained a cottage industry until 1770, when Jessop and Hankcock developed a new pewter alloy in Sheffield, which included antimony instead of lead and some copper, becoming known as Britannia metal, allowing it to achieve a bright polish. Soon, a new manufacturing method called metal spinning developed, resulting in a massive increase in pewter product production. This led to the creation of a lightweight, highly refined product that quickly became a popular alternative to more expensive silver-plated items.
