Description
The Antico Direttorio wardrobe is veneered and inlaid, with three drawers at the front, standing on cut, pyramidal legs. The handles were attached after the piece was constructed, and in particular, the "badge" covers the inlay of a beautiful rose window that corresponds with the nozzle, as seen in the attached photo.
An inlaid rosette decorates the center of the tabletop.
The furniture is in good condition but requires restoration and polishing.
It comes from a private Lombard collection and is in fairly good preservation condition consistent with its early 19th-century dating.
Elegant antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
Several key styles characterize antique furniture, but a few stand out. Eclectic furniture reflects the 19th century, dominated by the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles blend into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture and accessories date from the late 18th to early 19th century. This period was influenced by Napoleon’s reign, which imposed a strong resemblance to and references from Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture, such as Louis XVI style, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. The Baroque style, whose name derives from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—features highly decorative furniture meant to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture craftsmanship. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and relief decorations. It can certainly be said that these were quite specific products, but they opened up many new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets or broadly speaking, chest furniture. During this period, mythology and ancient times were also of interest, leading to furniture supports and legs shaped like animals.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common features in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, giving each style a distinct character. This is especially important when searching for an exclusive antique that suits your interior.
The key aspect of elite antique furniture is originality. And this is ultimately crucial from the buyer’s perspective, as many counterfeits circulate on the market.
