Description
Achille Cattaneo Church Interior Oil painting on canvas from the early 20th century, signed at the bottom left, A. Achille Cattaneo (Limbiate, 1872 - Milan, 1931). Between 1888 and 1896, he attended drawing and architecture courses at the Brera Academy, where he studied under Emilio Goli. He dedicated himself to cityscape views reminiscent of 19th-century urban painting, particularly reproducing interiors of churches in Milan and Venice, as well as Navigli views. He first exhibited at the Society of Fine Arts in Milan in 1900. In the 1920s, he gained recognition: in 1925, he organized a solo exhibition at Bottega di Poesia and approached 20th-century Italian art, participating in his first exhibition in Milan in 1926. During this time, he appeared at various editions of the International Art Exhibition in Venice (1924, 1926, 1928) and at the National Exhibitions in Milan (1925, 1927).
Elegant antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture belongs to the 19th century, during which the prevailing Biedermeier style was prominent. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture and accessories date from the late 18th to early 19th century. Everything originated from Napoleon’s reign, which imposed a strong resemblance and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture is associated with Louis XVI style, which also heavily references ancient architecture. Interesting and noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, a term derived from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to further emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the past era. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture-making art. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and bulky, often using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These were quite distinctive products but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cupboards and broadly speaking, chest furniture. There was also an interest in mythology and ancient times, with supports and legs taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, drawing inspiration from Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its unique character. This is especially crucial when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.
The most important aspect of prestigious antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately vital for buyers, as many forgeries circulate on the market. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the product’s authenticity and compliance with the description and photos.
