Don Quixote of La Mancha (Spanish: Don Quijote de la Mancha, actually Alonso Quijano), also known as the "Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance" – a fictional character from Miguel de Cervantes' novel. He is about fifty years old, a nobleman who, influenced by literature about chivalrous deeds, decides to become a wandering knight. He sets out with his horse Rocinante. He is also accompanied by his squire Sancho Panza. Inspired by literary heroes, Don Quixote chooses a lady of his heart – she is the peasant girl Aldonza Lorenzo, whom the hero calls Dulcinea of Toboso. The name of the character has given rise to the term "donquixotism" for a certain attitude.
