Exceptional antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for furnishing our interiors. There is currently a growing appreciation for high-quality vintage items that possess character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, during which the Biedermeier style was dominant. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture and accessories date from the late 18th to early 19th century. This style was influenced by Napoleon’s reign, emphasizing grandeur and referencing Roman and Greek decorative motifs.
Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Notable and interesting are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. The Baroque style, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning irregularly developed pearl—features highly ornate furniture designed to impress with splendor and luxury. Selectively used luxurious materials were employed to emphasize the opulence of these pieces.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style has influenced modern classic furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, often using brown stains, cornices, strong bases, and relief decorations. These pieces were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of cupboards and broadly conceived chest furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were also popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands recreate such furniture, inspired by Italian and French artisans, as a tribute to the beauty of Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently across countries, and each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for an exclusive antique that suits your interior.
The key aspect of prestigious antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is crucial for buyers, as the market is flooded with many forgeries.
