Aphrodite (Gr. Ἀφροδίτη Aphrodítē, Latin: Aphrodite, Venus) – in Greek mythology, the goddess of love, beauty, flowers, desire, and fertility. The most beautiful of the ancient gods.
Her origin is depicted differently in various myths. According to one version, Aphrodite had no parents and one day she emerged from the foam of the sea near Cyprus.
Hephaestus, or Hesiod in his Theogony, described it slightly differently: when Uranus’s genitals, cut off with a sickle by Cronus (who overthrew him as he stretched over Gaia like the sky over the earth), fell into the sea near Cyprus, the water was surrounded by white foam, from which the beautiful Aphrodite then emerged.
She floated across the sea in a shell, stopping at the coasts of Kythera and then Cyprus. The latter became her favorite place. On its shore, she was already awaited by Charites (Euphrosyne, Aglaja, and Talia), who have always accompanied and served her since then. Cyprus became the main place of worship for the goddess.
