In the 1820s, James Shoolbred established his company in London. James Shoolbred & Co sold textiles, carpets, and other interior decoration items. In the 1870s, the company designed and produced original high-quality furniture inspired by the aesthetic qualities of E.W. Godwin's architecture. The furniture was sold in the shop and also appeared in the James Shoolbred & Co catalog, which was distributed outside London. Over the next decade, the company expanded and moved to a larger location in London, becoming one of the first department stores. James Shoolbred's furniture was always displayed and photographed alongside textiles, carpets, and lamps that the company also sold, creating sample interior designs for clients.
Exclusive antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few key ones stand out. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, marked by the prevailing Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles transitioned into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, inspired by Napoleon's reign. It features significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Interesting and noteworthy are all antique products in Rococo style and Louis XV. The Baroque style, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by highly ornate furniture meant to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique materials were selectively used to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style as well is Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture-making. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive. Brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and reliefs were commonly used. These were quite distinctive products but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets or broadly conceived chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times also inspired these designs, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for an exclusive antique that suits your interior.
The key to stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this matters most to buyers, as many forgeries circulate on the market.
