Description
Gold-plated carved wooden frames made of pine with an impressive pattern of rolled leaves, which unfold around the main rectangular frame, edged with carved and gilded beads. In good condition, despite old restorations due to the delicacy of the structure. The frames house two 18th-century mercury mirrors. Northern Italy 1800.
These antique frames are hand-carved and decorated with acanthus leaves and scrolls, featuring a deep upper section and a lighter, perforated decoration at the bottom. The central part of the safety strip is rectangular, edged with a carved bead. The delicate frames are gilded and in good condition. The photos show traces of old restorations, one bent corner glued, and minimal gilding repairs, visible in the gallery. These small, antique Italian mirrors, due to their size, can be hung on the wall or used as furniture decorations. They come from a private collection from Northern Italy, early 19th century.
Beautiful antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of traditional and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture from the 19th century includes the beloved Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Original Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from the reign of Napoleon. It heavily references Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also draws strong inspiration from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, a term derived from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly ornate pieces designed to radiate splendor and serve a luxurious role. Selectively used materials emphasized the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classic furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style is also significant, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries and leaving a major mark on furniture-making. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and relief decorations. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were also popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands recreate such furniture inspired by Italian and French artisans, demonstrating admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, giving each style a unique character. This is especially crucial when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.
The key to stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is vital for buyers, as the market is flooded with many forgeries.
