Description
A German automaton with a bird from the early 20th century, consisting of a round, gilded brass cage with a singing bird inside, sitting on a perch with a mushroom at the base. Automata and music boxes, as curiosities from Wunderkammer, were always built by master clockmakers to amaze. The joy brought by viewing these automata, which move, sing, look at each other, and communicate without any visible mechanical noise—as if by some secret magic—stimulates the observer's imagination, giving a sense of true life in the forest. In our case, this cage presents us with the love song of a male nightingale; singing begins when a key is inserted under the base and can be stopped by pressing a lever on the edge of the cage. The synchronization of the mechanical movement and sound should be considered practically perfect and achievable in reality. The pursuit of this extraordinary effect of non-virtual truth was essentially the difference between a good master clockmaker and a truly genius one.
This singing bird cage is a movable automaton made of gilded brass, crafted in the early 20th century by the company of Karl Griesbaum (1872-1941). The bottom of the cage bears an engraving featuring a bird, the initials K G, and the inscription “Made in Germany.” The company was founded in 1905 in the Black Forest, in Triberg, Baden-Württemberg, by Karl Griesbaum (1872-1941), son of the renowned watchmaker Mathias.
The internal mechanism consists of several bellows operated by spring-driven gear wheels and is in excellent technical condition. The overall state of preservation is good, with visible signs of wear, indicating the object dates from the early 20th century.
Original antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage products that possess a specific character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of traditional and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture belongs to the 19th century, during which the beloved Biedermeier style flourished. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Everything was influenced by Napoleon’s reign, which imposed a strong resemblance and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy and interesting are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. The next style is Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word barocco—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to shine with splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these works.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style has influenced modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the past era. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture-making. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using brown stains, cornices, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly speaking, chest-type furniture. Here, too, there was an interest in mythology and ancient times, so supports and legs often took animal forms.
The most important aspect of vintage antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately crucial from the buyer's perspective, as the market is filled with many forgeries.
