Description
Stories of enchanting “One Thousand and One Nights” have entered the folklore of the entire world, but their origins date back to Arabic and Indian oral traditions of the early Middle Ages. Their captivating power lies in the persistence of storyteller Scheherazade, who weaves a new tale every night to avoid execution. Popular characters such as Aladdin, Ali Baba, and Sindbad the Sailor have become part of Arabian Nights, added in later years but told within the intriguing structure of the original. Such additions were made by translators and collaborators from many European and Eastern sources, but it was Richard Burton’s edition that caught the attention of Victorian-era readers eager to explore new cultures, with these popular folk tales. Burton’s edition forms the basis of this new collection, featuring stories that have survived from the original, presented here: “The Merchant and the Djinn,” “The Fisherman and the Djinn,” “The Porter and the Three Ladies,” “The Three Apples.”
