Well, that’s the story: long ago, when Scotland was ravaged by Vikings, a group of Scottish warriors was resting in a field overnight. They didn’t know that a raiding party was preparing to attack them under the cover of darkness. As the attacking Vikings approached the encampment, they stepped barefoot onto a patch of nettles and, of course, cried out in pain as the thorns pierced deeply into their soles and toes. The Scots, awakened by this commotion, were able to repel the attackers. From that day on, the thistle was adopted as Scotland’s national emblem.
