They didn't know that a raiding party was preparing to attack them under the cover of darkness. As the attacking Vikings approached the encampment, they stepped barefoot on a patch of nettles and, of course, cried out in pain as the thorns pierced deeply into their soles and toes. The Scots, awakened by this ruckus, were able to repel the attackers. Since then, the thistle has been adopted as Scotland’s national emblem.
