The motif on the pen depicts The Onaga-dori (Rooster with a long tail, represented in art as a phoenix), which was a spiritual symbol of peace in ancient China and was used in Japan during the Heian period (a time of Chinese cultural influence on Japan). In Japan, the rooster was depicted realistically and was often used in Japanese kimono textiles.
