The motif on the pen depicts The Onaga-dori (Long-tailed rooster, depicted as a phoenix in art), which was a spiritual symbol of peace in ancient China and was used in Japan during the Heian period (a time of Chinese cultural influence on Japan). In Japan, the rooster was depicted realistically and was often used in kimono fabrics.
