Vincent Van Gogh painted this scene while in a psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy, near Arles. The bold use of impasto and the beauty of the tall trees make it one of his most recognizable works. There are various other versions of the painting, including one depicting a closer view of the vertically painted cypresses, as well as a replica of this version that Van Gogh painted for his mother and sister.
