Alphonse Mucha was a defining figure of the Art Nouveau era and is celebrated for his images of beautiful women. Cowslip creates a mirror for another Mucha work, Feather. In both, a woman gazes at the titular object in her hand, though while Cowslip depicts a brunette, Feather shows a blonde. Both feature the familiar motif of a halo-like circle surrounding the head, which can be seen in many of Mucha's works.
