Schönbrunn Palace – Vienna
The 2016 Pen of the Year was inspired by precious panels from the "Vieux-Laque" room, created in the imperial manufactory in Beijing. A touch of Asia combined with German craftsmanship: the limited edition Pen of The Year 2016 references Austrian Empress Maria Theresa. After the unexpected death of her beloved husband Franz Stefan in 1765, Maria Theresa transformed one of the rooms in Schönbrunn Palace into a memorial space. Black lacquered tiles imported from Beijing were embedded in maple wood paneling and decorated with gilded frames.
