In 1868, watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the "International Watch Co." in Schaffhausen, away from the watchmaking centers of French-speaking Switzerland. His plan was to combine American manufacturing techniques with skilled craftsmanship.
And he found in Schaffhausen the perfect conditions: modern factory buildings, powered by the Rhine to run his water-powered machinery, and a centuries-old watchmaking tradition.
