Description
Reinterpretation of a large ancient painting by Angelo Granati, “Clara the Rhinoceros in Paris in 1749,” based on a work by Jean Baptiste Oudry. The renowned court painter of King Louis XV, known for his highly detailed paintings depicting hunting scenes.
The Indian rhinoceros, born in Assam and known as Clara, caused a sensation in 1741. A Dutch captain brought the rhinoceros — an animal never before seen in Europe — from India to Rotterdam, of course by ship. He showcased it at the Saint-Germain fair in Paris, where it inspired many artists to create sketches and studies of it.
