Description

Manufactory Tissot, founded in the mid-nineteenth century in the small town of Le Locle, one of the cradles of Swiss watchmaking, has a rich and fascinating history.

How did it all start?

On July 1, 1853, Charles-Félicien Tissot, who specialized in gold cases, opened the shop Ch. Félicien Tissot & Fils with his son, Charles-Emile Tissot, a watchmaker. At that time, Tissot operated as a comptoir d’établissage, a network of independent and highly skilled workers who produced individual watch parts in their homes.

These components were then assembled and sold in the store. Tissot primarily produced pocket watches, luxury chain watches, and functional timepieces, mainly for sale in the United States, which was the company's first export market. The next step for the Swiss manufacturer was Russia, a large and prosperous market.

At the end of 1917, the company Chs. Tissot & Fils SA was established, which became a manufactory through the introduction of semi-finished movements, operating in this way for the following decades. Soon after, the company strengthened its presence on the international market.

In 1930, Tissot and Omega merged to create the first Swiss watchmaking company SSIH (Société Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogère).

In the 1970s, the Swiss watchmaking industry was severely affected by a crisis that emerged with the advent of quartz watches. In 1983, Nicolas G. Hayek, who conducted an audit of the watch sector, recommended a merger of the largest watch manufacturing groups of that period: SSIH (mainly Tissot and Omega) and ASUAG (a holding company combining movement semi-finished product producers and components).

  • The group named SMH (Swiss Corporation for Microelectronics and Watchmaking Industries Ltd.) transformed into The Swatch Group in 1998. Since 1996, Tissot has been managed by François Thiébaud.

Today, Tissot is a very well-known and elite watch brand, appreciated by collectors and all lovers of good design.
