The original game called Trictrac in Polish was already famous in ancient times, mainly around the Mediterranean Sea but also in Middle Eastern, North African, and Asia Minor countries.

Its English name (backgammon) was coined in the 17th century and is believed to derive from the medieval word "gamen" meaning "back game," referring to the rules: returning your pieces home, as well as the possibility of hitting and starting over.

To this day, Trictrac remains a folk game among Georgians, Armenians, Arabs, and Turks, and is also known in Yugoslavia and Bulgaria.
