This image was used to illustrate the story of “The Wicker Bush” in Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Volume 5 (1920). It depicts an owl standing guard over the wicker bush after daring to call itself “King of Birds”. Carl Fahringer was an Austrian artist who studied at both the Vienna Academy and the Munich Academy, traveled across Europe and the Far East.
