Alphonse Mucha was a defining figure of the Art Nouveau era and is celebrated for his images of beautiful women. Cowslip creates a mirror for another of Mucha's works, Feather. In both cases, the woman gazes at the titular object in her hand, although while Cowslip depicts a brunette, Feather features a blonde. Both include the familiar motif of a circle surrounding the head, which can be seen in many of Mucha's works.
