Vincent Van Gogh painted this image while he was in a psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy, near Arles. The bold use of impasto and the beauty of tall trees make it one of his most recognizable works. There are various other versions of the painting, including one that depicts closer views of vertically painted cypresses, as well as a replica of this version that Van Gogh painted for his mother and sister.
