William Morris was largely inspired by nature, which is evident here in Compton. His love for flora and fauna arose from following the doctrines of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, with which Morris was closely associated, forming friendships with its founders Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882), William Holman Hunt (1827–1910), and John Everett Millais (1829–1896).
