Paul Klee was the son of a music teacher and a professional singer. For this reason, music and art remained in his mind throughout his life, exemplified by his use of vivid colors as expressive as the sounds of individual instruments. He once wrote: “One day I must be able to freely play on the keyboard of my colors,” a sentiment shared by his friends and fellow artists Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) and Franz Marc (1880–1916).
