The cast of Dickens' characters, from orphan Pip, Miss Haversham, and Estella to the aptly named Magwitch, guides the reader through Victorian society torn apart by social woes and misplaced ambitions. Pip, a blacksmith's apprentice, meets and helps the escaped convict Magwitch, who later repays the boy with a secret fortune. Pip mistakenly interprets the source of his rise, believing it comes from Miss Haversham's upper circles and her cold daughter, whom he adores. His naive awareness is revealed throughout as Estella's disdain for Pip drives him to try harder, to the detriment of good people like Joe Gargery and Mrs. Joe, who raised him in poverty in a forge. Ultimately, Miss Haversham perishes in a fire, and Magwitch dies in prison, leaving the disappointed Pip without his fortune. Everything is resolved when he finally wins Estella's heart.
