Description
French cylindrical Napoleon III desk with a flap. An elegant antique Napoleon III desk made of mahogany, barrel-shaped, with a flap and a box with three drawers and a large front drawer, featuring a harmonious design, supported by delicately curved legs and decorated with frames and elements made of gilded bronze, emphasizing the prestige of this cabinet.
The mechanism with levers and linkages connects the opening of the cylinder with the extension of the front drawer, which acts as a support; then, raising the calatoia, a large writing surface is obtained, with a central brown leather insert revealing three drawers topped with an internal partition. When the flap is opened, this exclusive French-origin desk with a raised top reaches a depth of 85 centimeters.
It is in good overall conservation condition, considering it dates from around 1870. It has minimal flaws and signs of use; it comes from the estate of a Milanese antique collection.
Prestigious antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that have a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, during which the Biedermeier style was dominant. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture and accessories date from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Everything originated from Napoleon’s reign, which imposed a significant resemblance to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture is associated with Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles are also interesting and noteworthy. Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by very ornate furniture designed to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique materials were selectively used to further emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style is also significant, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries and leaving a profound mark on furniture-making art. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets and broadly speaking, chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times were also of interest, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture inspired by Italian and French artisans, reflecting admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its own character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.
The key aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is crucial from the buyer’s perspective, as many forgeries circulate on the market. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the authenticity of the product in accordance with its description and photographs. We have appraisers, art experts, historians, and specialists from around the world at your disposal.
