Embedding gold and silver onto metals such as steel, copper, iron, or bronze was what conferred prestige and distinction to these works.
Knowledge of Damascene steel reached Europe during the Crusades. Among European knights, legends quickly spread about swords made from this steel, capable of cutting candles in half without knocking them over, as well as shattering stones and European swords.
