Apollo — in Greek mythology, the son of Zeus and Leto. Born on the island of Delos. He was the twin brother of Artemis. Considered the god of beauty, light, life, death, music, prophecy, truth, law, order, patron of arts and poetry, and guide of the Muses (Ἀπόλλων Μουσηγέτης Apóllōn Mousēgétēs). He resided on Parnassus, from where he sent inspiration.

Apollo was the youngest and most handsome of the gods among men.

In reality, a deity with broad, often conflicting, powers. Originally, androgynous (as reflected by the twin pair Apollo-Artemis), a god of sudden death – the Greeks derived his name from ἀπόλλυμι (apóllymi) "destroy, kill," but also compare IE. *abol (< *obol-) "apple" (symbol – source of knowledge).

A god who is both solar and chthonic. By killing the serpent-dragon Python (or Delphi, which was a hypostasis of the primordial Magna Mater), guarding the gate to secret knowledge hidden beneath/within the earth, he took control of the oracle at Delphi (Greek: delfy "womb"). The killing of Python, like the slaying of Wrytry by Indra, was a great heroic act but also a curse from which one had to purify oneself. He established the Pythian Games and descended into the underworld. He became a messenger of divine (Zeus’s) decrees, especially concerning purification rites after murder. He expelled (apotropaios) and purified (katharsios) from evil (the crime of murder), which he himself had caused (cf.: Dionysus).
