In 1868, watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the "International Watch Co." in Schaffhausen, away from the watchmaking centers of French-speaking Switzerland. His plan was to combine American manufacturing techniques with skilled craftsmanship.
And he found the perfect conditions in Schaffhausen: innovative factory buildings powered by the Rhine to operate his machinery with hydroelectricity, and, finally, a centuries-old watchmaking tradition.
