ATTENTION TO DETAIL

We strive to ensure that each candle is of the highest quality. This means focusing on every detail so that the candles look, burn, and smell truly wonderful. It took us eighteen months to create our fragrances, with hundreds of hours spent on blending, pouring, and testing. This ensures the best balance of wax and fragrance distribution for each candle size, combined with the optimal thickness of various wicks chosen to ensure the highest quality of burning.

Our candles have been made at our Dublin headquarters since 1488. They are still hand-poured, just as they were centuries ago, creating a correlation between tradition and modernity. We are committed to production in Ireland and maintain the status of the oldest company in Ireland.

We are the oldest candle-making brand in the world. For centuries, we have pioneered new candle-making techniques in our Dublin factory, and we continue to reside in this city. Our candles are woven into the community of Ireland, providing light for homes and streets for over 500 years.

BACKGROUND

It all began on Wynetavern Street, Dublin, where John G Rathborne founded our manufactory. He moved from Chester, England, to start a new profession in candle production. Candles have been an integral part of people's lives since the 1530s. Joseph's candles became a key supplier for the city. Our products made Dublin and the Irish seas safe at night, as they were used to illuminate homes, streets, and lighthouses for residents and visitors from overseas.

INNOVATION AND TRADITION

Throughout our 500 years of experience, we have developed our candles and the appropriate techniques and materials for our products. During the industrial revolution, we moved away from animal tallow to develop special new wax formulas using beeswax and stearin. This new blend provided a clean, slower burn while preserving our artisanal methods, such as handcrafting all our candles.

BEYOND THE PALE COLLECTION

To celebrate being the oldest candle-making company in the world and five centuries of handcrafting, we created the Beyond the Pale collection, six beautiful scents that capture the spirit of Ireland with an exclusive and modern touch. The glow of candles is now more familiar in the home than on the streets, and this collection is the result of centuries of innovation. We drew inspiration from Dublin, saying: Beyond the Pale; the wild area beyond the safety of city walls. We created scents inspired by Irish roses, herbal blends of mint and thyme, and the bark of Irish trees. We create our luxurious fragrances to complement the home and indulge the senses, creating a range of desirable and stylish accessories for modern living.

Evoking the warmth of the sun, citrus and raspberry notes blend smoothly with middle notes of creamy roses, vanilla, and a base of agarwood, patchouli, and amber resin to transport you to the green Irish coast. 

The Rathbornes gift set was created to nourish, protect, and smooth the skin with natural ingredients found in Ireland – a soothing blend of lavender and seaweed, gentle chamomile extract, and detoxifying ginseng root extract. 

This elegant gift set includes 250 ml of revitalizing body and hand wash and 250 ml of moisturizing body and hand lotion. 

The cosmetics are free from SLS and parabens.
