Description

Decorated terracotta travel flask from 1800, round, hollow inside, with a white background featuring abstract decorations in shades of blue, ochre, and green. The ornament is placed exclusively on the outer side of the barrel. It originates from central Italy and is in good condition.

These small terracotta bottles were specially designed to store water or other liquids essential for quenching the thirst of pilgrims during their journey. Relatively small in size, with a lens-shaped form, they could be attached to a belt or carried on the shoulder using a string wrapped around the flask and threaded through four loops or perforated sockets on the sides.

Thus, the basic travel tool was soon decorated and enriched with new shapes, both in terms of the plastic material from which the flask was made and its typology, leading to unique forms such as the hollow inside flask, which, equipped with a base, suggests more of a decorative than functional purpose.

The decorations also include primitive graffiti with geometric or floral motifs, enamel coloring, or imagery that may be pictorial, following common patterns of the period, or, as in the most popular examples, abstract, like in the case of bottles with abstract, almost freeform decoration, where we might think that the decorator simply had a palette of colors to use or finish with.

Beautiful antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that possess a distinct character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of traditional and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.

Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture from the 19th century, especially the beloved Biedermeier style, is notable. Its early 19th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles transition into pseudo styles of classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.

Original Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from the reign of Napoleon. It features significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.

Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also strongly references ancient architecture. Antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles are also interesting and noteworthy. Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by very ornate furniture designed to exude splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were selectively used to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.

Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cupboards and broadly speaking, chest-type furniture. They also reflected an interest in mythology and antiquity, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.

Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, and each style had its unique character. This is especially important when choosing a luxurious antique piece for your interior.

The most important aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. And this is ultimately crucial from the customer's perspective, as many counterfeits circulate on the market.
