On the cap, there is an image of Virgil and Dante's friend before entering the door, where a phrase in Italian is inscribed: “Lasciate ogni speranza voi ch' entrate” (English): “Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.” This is the first famous line from the Divine Comedy, and on the edge of the cap, there is the final phrase, when they exit hell and return to earth (Italian): “E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stele” (English): “And then we emerged to see the stars again.”
