Claude Monet was an exceptionally perceptive and experimental artist, from his early days as an Impressionist to later flirtations with abstract expressionism. Later in life, inspired by Japanese water gardens, Monet spent a lot of time in his beloved Giverny. Decorated with poppies, blue salvia, daisies, and irises, the waters were only disturbed by bamboo and water lilies. His water garden was originally created to satisfy the need to be near water and to provide a visual feast to enjoy at his home. His famous wooden green footbridge was built over the water and became a focal point in many of his works. He said: “It took me some time to understand my water lilies. I planted them for pleasure.” And so he began working on what is probably the most famous series of paintings the world has ever seen.
