Description
The first English translation of the renowned Golden Age Science Fiction Classic.
“This stunning classic stands shoulder to shoulder with Arthur C. Clarke, Asimov, and Heinlein.” – New York Times and USA Today bestselling authors W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear
Tankar Holroy, Lieutenant of the Star Guard of the Earth Empire, drifts in space after his spaceship is sabotaged. Rescued by a massive, unknown vessel, he awakens to discover that he has been saved by the Star People, who are born and live in space, with minimal contact with planets and their inhabitants, whom they contemptuously call planetarians.
After a cold reception from the ship’s leader, Teknora, open hostility follows from the other inhabitants of Tilsin. Only a woman named Orena approaches him.
Tankar soon realizes that he was saved thanks to his knowledge of markers, a technology that allows Empire ships to track others through hyperspace—a technology that the Star People lack. Out of spite, he refuses to share this vital knowledge, which could protect the people who saved him but now reject him—and the consequences will be catastrophic.
