Description
Talented Eugenio Castellotti was a member of Scuderia Lancia, just like Alberto Ascari and Luigi Villoresi. Thanks to his achievements in the Grands Prix in Turin and Pau, Castelotti arrived at the Monaco GP with great confidence, knowing he had the right to start from fourth position, right behind Fangio, Ascari, and Moss.
CMC faithfully recreated the Lancia D50 runner-up with starting number 30. This miniature boasts a truly sporty appearance and a charismatic reference to aerodynamic styling.
Eugenio Castellotti, born on October 10, 1930, was registered as an amateur driver who raced for Ferrari in 1950. He was talented enough to achieve an impressive second place on the podium at the mega-sporting Mille Miglia race in 1952. From 1953, he raced exclusively and successfully with sports cars. In this year's Carrera Panamericana, he finished third, just behind Juan Manuel Fangio and Piero Taruffi. He also won the Italian Hill Climb Championship in 1953. No wonder Gianni Lancia, an enthusiast of motorsports, signed a contract with Eugenio Castellotti for his Scuderia Lancia.
The debut of Scuderia Lancia at the Spanish GP (the last race of the 1954 racing season) and again at the Argentine GP (opening the new 1955 season) turned out to be a disaster. None of the team’s three cars ever crossed the finish line, and scoring points towards the championship was out of reach.
Successes in two Grands Prix in Turin and Pau, which followed the F1 race in Argentina, were very much needed but did not truly fulfill Gianni Lancia’s dream of Formula 1. However, he took satisfaction in the fact that his drivers and machines matched Mercedes in Monaco. Ascari and Fangio recorded identical lap times – 1:42.1 minutes, but Fangio was the first to achieve this and thus secured pole position. Immediately behind Ascari was Stirling Moss, who finished third, and behind him Eugenio Castellotti in fourth place.
It was an exciting race, full of technical problems and team withdrawals from Mercedes, Maserati, and Gordini. The turbulent atmosphere reached a climax when Ascari plunged into the sea in his Lancia D50. At least this incident had nothing to do with mechanical failure. The 1955 Monaco Grand Prix ended almost comically, with everyone amazed that the winner was Maurice Trintignant, racing in a reliable, supercharged, but seemingly outdated Ferrari. He led Eugenio Castellotti by just 20 seconds on the hundredth and final lap.
