Description

Regarded by other Impressionists as a “virtuosic colourist,” Berthe Morisot (1841–95) sought to be recognized as an equal among her peers – a struggle uphill in times when women were generally barred from formal artistic training. Nevertheless, she managed to build a career, earn respect, become a key player, and create a body of work that has stood the test of time. Her Impressionism vibrates with light and spontaneity, and through skillful use of colour, she achieves a richness of form. Inevitably, she painted what she experienced: scenes of intimate domestic and family life, gardens, flowers, landscapes – depicting the authentic, unfiltered everyday life of nineteenth-century women – from the tender portrayal of maternal love in “Cradle” to the Far Eastern inspiration of Julie with her Greyhound Laerte.

This magnificent book introduces the reader to the background, life, and work of the artist, followed by a curated selection of her best works in exquisite full-page reproductions.
