Description
Inspired by Bessie Smith, Janis Joplin became a rock star with Big Brother & The Holding Company in San Francisco and enjoyed a meteoric solo career before her premature death from a drug overdose in Los Angeles. She was the most captivating blues singer of the 60s, with an exhilarating, emotional depth and fiery stage presence, which dominated albums such as Big Brother’s Cheap Thrills (1968) and the posthumous, chart-topping Pearl (1971). She became the voice of a generation with a weary, cynical tone that still resonates with curious and longing youth today, amid a music scene saturated with rap.
Unfortunately, Janis Joplin died at the age of 27, joining the infamous '27 Club' of artists and musicians who passed away at 27. She joined figures like Robert Johnson, Jim Morrison, and Brian Jones. The 50th anniversary of Joplin’s death falls in October 2020. This new book from the Flame Tree Rock Icons series covers her life, recordings, and live performances, along with a wide range of posters and photographs.
