David Copperfield is the story of a hard life endured, ultimately rewarded through perseverance, kindness, and common sense. Copperfield loses his father as a child, and his mother marries Murdstone, a cruel man who torments her and sends the boy away from home to a boarding school. His mother dies, and Copperfield is then sent to a factory before escaping to his Aunt Betsey Trotwood, who protects him and with whom he maintains a lifelong bond. Further suffering follows when Copperfield’s first wife dies in childbirth, but by the end of the novel, he also remarries, finally living happily with Agnes and their three children. Throughout, Dickens emphasizes systemic abuses against the weak, the sick, and often women, aiming to show that poverty is society’s fault, not the individual’s, and that the poor should be helped, not repressed.
Incredible titles and a wide range of authors are part of Flame Tree Publishing’s portfolio.
