Description
With a new introduction by Professor John Sutherland, this edition offers a fresh perspective on one of the great works of the 20th century.
Animal Farm is a moral animal allegory, written to highlight human frailty and satirize Stalin's rule, whose revolution ended in totalitarianism. Full of slogans like “All animals are equal,” Orwell questions the dark betrayal of the pigs with straightforward economy of style, as other animals, with open eyes and naivety, are manipulated. By the end of the book, the pigs are as corrupt and arrogant as the humans they replace.
For many, the book was a broader allegory of human behavior, a lament; but for others, it was a call to action, foreshadowing the Cold War, during which different ideologies attempted to use Orwell’s masterpiece for their own purposes.
