Description

An antique engraving featuring a soldier from 1600 by Dutch artist Jacob De Gheyn; it is an etching on watermarked paper, representing an important example of late Mannerist printmaking art. De Gheyn, one of the most influential engravers of his time, dedicated much of his career to depicting military themes, which were particularly relevant in 17th-century Europe marked by conflicts and wars.

The engraving is part of the work “Wapenhandelinghe van Roers, Musquetten ende Spiessen,” a manual that not only provides instructions on the use of weapons but also serves as a historical document offering insights into the customs and life of soldiers of that era. The engravings included in the volume illustrate a wide range of military figures, with particular attention to details of uniforms and weapons, reflecting the tactical and military evolution after the Union of Utrecht in 1579.

The central figure of the work, a soldier with a halberd, symbolizes not only authority and nobility but also the era in which innovative combat strategies and infantry organization, promoted by figures such as Maurice of Nassau, changed the battlefield landscape in Europe.

Preserved as an important element of military history and the evolution of weaponry techniques in the 17th century, De Gheyn’s works have become highly sought-after collectibles for historians, collectors, and art enthusiasts. The fact that they are available in large numbers and cover diverse themes allows for an exploration of various aspects of military life of that period, making each engraving a small historical treasure.

The sheet measures 35 x 23.5 cm, is in good condition, and is packaged in a ivory-colored cardboard box.

Beautiful antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that possess character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of traditional and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.

Several key styles characterize antique furniture. Eclectic furniture belongs to the 19th century, marked by the popular Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles transitioned into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.

Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from the reign of Napoleon, characterized by strong influences from Roman and Greek ornamentation.

Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by highly decorative furniture meant to exude splendor and luxury. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.

Today, we can observe how the Baroque style has significantly influenced modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a major mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and solid, using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets and broadly speaking, chest furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were also popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.

Lion's paws, eagle's heads – these are common sights in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture crafted in this style, drawing inspiration from Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that each country perceived furniture making differently, so each style in a given nation had its own distinct character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.

The most important aspect of vintage antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is crucial from the customer's perspective because the market is flooded with many counterfeits.
