The flagship Pelikan fountain pen model – the 400 – was created in 1950. Its elegant black-green stripes are recognized worldwide as a symbol of style and status. That’s why, in 1980, this series was named “Souverän,” which means sovereign or ruler in German. Despite many years of existence and subsequent improvements to the design, the basic mechanism remains unchanged. The preparation of resin intended for the production of the black-green cylinder is a time-consuming process that takes months. The other components of the pen are prepared with the utmost precision, so that when assembled, the transition between materials is imperceptible. The pen is topped with a cap featuring the classic pelican beak, placed on the pen like a crown of a true ruler.
The origins of Pelikan date back to chemist Carl Hornemann, who on April 28, 1838, presented his clients with an offer for oil paints, watercolors, and the so-called Pelikan archive – the foundation of the company's production line, from which the well-known global brand developed. The German manufacturer specializes in producing luxury writing instruments.
Decades of experience, specially trained staff, and the highest attention to detail at every stage of the manufacturing process ensure that each product is solidly made and unique. Depending on the model, the nibs are made from 14 or 18-karat gold. They are also sometimes rhodium-plated to achieve a silver shine. The decoration on the nib is typical for each model.
German Pelikan writing instruments with their characteristic resin body and clip in the shape of a pelican beak have become symbols of the finest taste and sophistication over the years.
