An oil-painted miniature on a board is an original, sophisticated, and highly valued tribute to the masterpiece by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, one of the most esteemed artists of the decadence era, known for portraits of scenes from ancient life, especially set in the Pompeian period. The exhibition “Alma Tadema and Nostalgia for Antiquity” in 2007 at the National Museum of Naples aimed to reciprocate the Dutch painter’s love for the city and its archaeological sites. It was on this occasion that Angelo Granati was able to draw direct inspiration from the master’s work across the Alps, enchanted by the decadent taste turned towards the past, the particular lighting, the languid atmosphere, and the finest female objects.
