Maki-e is a traditional Japanese craft passed down through generations. In translation, maki-e means “sprinkled picture.” It refers to a decorative technique involving the application of silver and gold flakes, sometimes enriched with gemstone dust, by sprinkling them onto the decorated surface. Mastery of this technique requires many years of training and a high level of manual skill.
All Pelikan pens from the Maki-e series are handcrafted pens designed for longevity. Intricate patterns adorning each Maki-e pen are created through a time-consuming decorating process, using specially prepared Urushi lacquer and precious metals. The unique collection of Maki-e pens is the epitome of luxury.
The history of Pelikan dates back to chemist Carl Hornemann, who on April 28, 1838, presented his clients with an offer for oil paints, watercolors, and the so-called Pelikan archive – the foundation of the company's production line, from which the well-known global brand developed. The German manufacturer specializes in producing luxury writing instruments.
Decades of experience, specially trained staff, and the highest attention to detail at every stage of the manufacturing process ensure that each product is solidly made and unique. Depending on the model, the nibs are made from 14 or 18-karat gold. They are also sometimes rhodium-plated to achieve a silver shine. The decoration on the nib is characteristic of each model.
