Description
Scottish Terrier in Portuguese ceramics. A figurine of a Scottish Terrier made from black glazed ceramic, with a red collar and glass eyes, in a playful invitation pose. It originates from the mid-20th century and bears the trademark of the Portuguese Algarve manufactory at the bottom. It is in excellent condition.
The craftsmanship of this sculpture highlights the beautiful features of the Scottish Terrier, such as its characteristic pointed ears, square muzzle, tousled coat, and lively, cheerful appearance. But we cannot remain indifferent to its stance; this Scottie has a playful tendency that makes it truly irresistible.
This breed was developed in Scotland in the 18th century as a hunter of foxes, badgers, otters, and wild rabbits. It is a quiet, somewhat stubborn companion and an excellent guard dog. Today, Scotties are among the most popular dogs, and Walt Disney's film Lady and the Tramp from 1955 helped popularize the image of the gentleman.
Elegant antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that have a distinct character and soul. It is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture dates back to the 19th century, during the reign of the Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and the Victorian English style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture refers to the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, characterized by strong influences from Roman and Greek decorative motifs.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Notable and interesting are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, a term derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly ornate pieces designed to shine with splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to emphasize the grandeur of these works.
Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style is also significant, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries and leaving a substantial mark on furniture craftsmanship. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and relief decorations. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times also inspired these designs, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands recreate such furniture, drawing inspiration from Italian and French artisans. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for an elegant antique piece suited for your interior.
The key aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately crucial for buyers, as many forgeries circulate on the market.
